“In repeating shapes, almost pattern-like, the artist, Zel Hunt introduces movement, forcing the viewer’s eye diagonally, horizontally and vertically across the canvas. This approach does however give way in some of her work, to a technique of employing straight hard edged lines vertically or horizontally, in order to construct foreground and background plains, and in so doing, gaining a visual depth to her painting. In some work there is a drama between methodically painted shapes and the juxtaposition of brutal brushstrokes. The meditative calm broken by the forceful. An introspective mood giving way to complete abandon - from restrained mark making to the strong gestural. Using similar tones in some areas, Zel then breaks this serenity by introducing areas of dark paint, and so gives the painting both structure, but more importantly - drama. This technique presents the viewer with a calmness sometimes broken - symbolic of life itself. Some work speaks of the artist’s location, whether consciously or unconsciously drawing from the coastal light, textures and atmosphere. Her past work, that of interacting with people, to her present situation of working alone as a painter, points to a commitment of the challenge of pushing boundaries - alone.Zel Hunt’s work is of constant reflection and continuing discovery and invention.”
